Images and tools

Making pictures, reading the ones you send, and the tools Xertron reaches for without being asked.

Making an image

Run /imagine with a prompt and Xertron posts the picture straight into the channel.

The daily cap resets on the calendar day rather than 24 hours after your last image, so one generated late tonight does not hold up one tomorrow morning.

When it will not

Image generation has three separate gates, and they fail with different messages because they need different people to fix them.

  • The plan. Generation needs the server on Premium.
  • The server toggle. An admin turns image generation on for the server. It is off by default even on Premium, since it is one of the two things that cost the most.
  • Your role. Admins can grant or withhold image generation per role, the same way they do the Pro model and deeper thinking. If none of your roles has the grant, the answer names that specifically.

A fourth case is not a gate at all. The image generator runs its own safety filter over the picture it produced, not just the prompt you wrote, so a borderline prompt can pass one attempt and be refused on the next. A refusal is free: it does not spend your image for the day, so re-running or rephrasing costs nothing.

Reading an image

Attach an image to a message that reaches Xertron and it sees it, describes it, and answers questions about it. Screenshots of errors, photographs of documents and diagrams all work.

This needs Premium. On a free server Xertron cannot see images at all. It reacts to say so rather than answering as though the picture were not there, which would be worse.

An image sent with no message text still gets a full reply, unlike a text file, which is stored quietly. See Talking to it.

Tools it uses on its own

Xertron decides when a tool helps and reaches for it mid-answer. There is nothing to invoke and no syntax to learn.

On any plan

  • Channel history and pins. Reads recent messages in a channel and its pinned ones, including the posts inside a forum channel, which it reads individually because a forum holds no messages of its own.
  • Reading files. Opens text files, PDFs and Word documents shared in chat, and finds the relevant part of a long one by meaning.
  • Reactions. Adds a standard emoji to a message.

On Premium

  • Web search and web fetch. Looks things up, and reads a URL you give it.
  • Editing and creating files. Not just reading the ones shared with it.
  • Searching reference files. The artifacts an admin uploaded for the server. See Memory and knowledge.
  • Member and server detail. Roles, join dates, and your server's own custom emojis rather than standard ones only.

Connectors add to this set per persona, which is how Xertron reaches tools that are not built in at all. See Connectors.

Web access

Web search and web fetch share one admin toggle, and it is off by default even on Premium.

Off means genuinely absent

When web access is off, Xertron does not have the tool and cannot see that it exists. It is not declining to look something up. If it did not check a source, the honest answer is that an admin has not turned web access on, and that is what it will tell you.

Web search and image generation are the two features that move a server's monthly limit fastest, which is why both start off. Turning them on is a decision about cost, made on the dashboard's Overview screen.
